Apple Pie in an Apple

Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Wash and dry baking apples. Cut the tops of each apple and set aside. With a spoon or melon baller, carefully hollow out each apple, removing the core and seeds and leaving 1/4 inch of flesh around the edges.

Mix granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a small basin. Put hollowed apples in a baking dish. Sprinkle lemon juice inside each apple.

Distribute the sugar-spice mixture evenly into each apple cavity. Add a couple butter slices to each stuffed apple.

Roll out pie crust dough on floured surface. Cut dough into thin strips with a sharp knife or pastry cutter. To seal, lattice the dough strips over each filled apple and push their edges into the apple.

Replace the apple tops on each filled apple. The filled apples should be soft and the crust golden brown after 25–30 minutes in the preheated oven.

Serve the apple pies when they cool from the oven. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
